Job Description

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises. It helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. We have been working in Kenya since 1992, implementing highly effective programs in Economic Recovery and Development (ERD), Women’s Protection and Empowerment, Protection, and Rule of Law, integrated healthcare, and nutrition across two refugee camps in Dadaab and Kakuma and three counties (Garissa, Turkana, and Nairobi). Through our ERD unit, we support refugees, asylum seekers, and vulnerable Kenyans in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and Lodwar to gain economic stability and self-reliance.

Job Overview/Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Protection Assistant the Protection Volunteer will be responsible for the actual implementation of the protection interventions in Turkana County focusing on (GPM+) group problem management plus, Individual Protection Assistance through crisis case management, community risk responses, community engagement and information dissemination, targeted in-kind assistance, service mapping and protection mainstreaming throughout the integrated health, nutrition, GBV, Economic Recovery and Development (ERD), WASH, Food Assistance, Agriculture and Protection response.

Major Responsibilities:

Conduct Systematic outreach services to targeted populations to facilitate service access by everyone including the most vulnerable population.
Offer Individual protection assistance through survival risk screening, issuance of various targeted assistance through interventions such as In-kind assistance, reasonable accommodation, cash assistance, and facilitating referral/ tracking with an outcome verification.
Document activities and client data accurately, detail protection assistance information, and safely store all information and records while adhering to the data protection policies.
Reporting, Submit weekly reports to the Protection Assistant and contribute to the development of regular activity achievements.
Implementation of Psychosocial support groups (GPM+) in the community for at-risk groups.
Work with the community-based structures, leaders, and community to ensure that they access and participate in the IRC interventions, building their capacity as first-line responders for sustained programs.
Community mobilization and engagement, with the support of the community health workers, mobilize the community for various interventions such as community focus group discussions, and information sharing on protection focusing on rights, entitlements, available services, and channels for reporting complaints and feedback.
Help in designing, developing, and disseminating protection Information education and communication materials.
Coordination and Networking:

Maintain and strengthen existing networks through other service providers at the community level, to ensure that survivors receive quality services and support both at the agency levels.
Participate in capacity-building training for the local partners around psychosocial support.
Strengthen and maintain networks with community leaders, women leaders, and service providers to ensure that survivors receive compassionate support from the community and to encourage greater communication, teamwork, and coordination among partners (protection, health, legal, and psychosocial sectors)
Identify new community structures to work with to ensure wholesome support to the clients.
Community Engagement and Outreach:

Conduct sensitization, dialogue, and mediation sessions with the wider population about protection-related issues.
Identify and strengthen Community structures through engaging community leaders, county govt, and other partners to ensure that the women & girls receive adequate support at the community level.
Support in the dissemination of relevant information during Community protection &SGBV forums and meetings.
Monitoring & Documentation:

Document all activities: Meetings, Training, events, Field monitoring, etc using appropriate documentation and reporting tools in the sector as required and ensure that all documents/data collected are properly and safely filed and stored.
Actively plan and submit weekly and monthly work plans and progress reports against set work plans using agreed reporting tools.
Develop, print, and distribute IEC materials on behavioral change and awareness aspects.
Prepare and share weekly and monthly reports as required.
Others:

Fulfil any other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Respect the code of conduct and policies of the IRC and the standards of the GBV team
Adhere to and uphold the IRC Way (integrity, Service, and Accountability) in the respective areas of work.

The Protection Kenya Programs’ goal is to promote, the rights, entitlements, and access to quality services responsive to their needs strengthen community-based structures and solutions to better protect at-risk groups, women, girls, boys, PWDs, elderlies and promote and maintain the strategic partnerships with relevant partners.

Qualifications
Lady above 20 years.
Certificate/Diploma in Counseling and/or Psychology, Community Development, Gender Studies or any Social Science.
Experience in psychosocial counseling, GPM+, working with at risk-groups.
Clear understanding of gender, abuse of power, and issues surrounding violence against women, and at-risk groups.
Able to identify different forms of protection risks and Gender Based Violence.
Highly motivated, creative, and compassionate person who is dedicated to ensuring that models of best practice are applied.
Able to uphold high ethical and professional standards.
Able to maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and respect for clients at all times.
Problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
Knowledge of protection principles, norms, and practices and dedicated, with the ability to engage well with the community.
Language Skills: Proficiency in English and Kiswahili, Knowledge of local language is a must.
